Menz-Guassa Community Conservation Area
Menz-Guassa (GCCA) is an area where one of the oldest conservation management system in Africa, dating back to the 17th century, is being practiced. GCCA is the smallest, but best protected Afro-alpine habitats in Ethiopia. Menz-Guassa is situated to the northeast of Addis Ababa, only a 260 kilometers drive from the city, which makes it ideal for a weekend trip.
Menz-Guassa offers stunning views over the plateau; one can also be able to spot endemic birds and wildlife including the Gelada Babbon and the Ethiopian Wolf. Trips from two to four days of short hikes and trekking can be arranged, services are provided from the community. Tours commence from Guassa Community Self-help Lodge and continue through designated wilderness camping grounds. Visits to the cluster of stone huts with thatched roofs (traditional Menz village) is an add-up. Their woven wool rugs and traditional blankets are considered to be some of Ethiopia's finest.
Ecotourism development in Guassa Community Conservation Area is being promoted by Frankfurt Zoological Society and local government in order to generate an alternative income for the Guassa user communities and to support management of the GCCA.
